Turn in your Information to
the SJA School Office as soon as possible
General Information
The CYO volleyball season includes 6 playing dates followed by a 2-week single elimination tournament. Matches are played on Saturdays or Sundays at various schools throughout the diocese. Your team will play two matches on each playing date. The season runs from August to October. The first matches are usually on the weekend after Labor Day.
SJA team selection will take place in early to mid August. Dates and times will be announced via email and in the church bulletin. All players registered before team selections will be placed on a team. Practice will begin soon after the teams are determined (before school starts). Teams practice two times per week.
The volleyball season overlaps directly with the CYO cross country and CYO soccer seasons. Players who participate in more than one sport might have conflicts with practices and games/meets.
Coaches
SJA’s athletic program exists solely through the efforts of our volunteers - please consider sharing your time and talent as a CYO coach. Head and assistant coaches for 5th and 6th grade teams are typically parents of players. We try to find non-parent head coaches for 7th and 8th grade teams. If you have suggestions for non-parent coaches, please contact Gretchen Hartlage, Volleyball Commissioner.
CYO has a required certification program for all coaches. New coaches and coaches who have not maintained their certification must attend a 6-hour program. Returning coaches must attend a 3-hour recertification program annually. Certification dates will be announced in August on the CYO website www.cyss.org. All coaches are also required to be electronically fingerprinted and have a BCI criminal background check (one time only).
Player supplied equipment
All players should wear tennis shoes. Kneepads are optional but recommended. They can be purchased at Dick’s, Team Sports, etc. SJA provides the uniform shirt. Players wear their own black shorts.
How is your $55 fee spent?
The majority of your volleyball fee is used to pay the CYO team entry fee ($100+ per team) and CYO player fees ($25+ per person). Remaining monies are used to purchase uniforms (up to $30 each), nets, and other equipment.
Important things to remember
Please register to play prior to the end of the school year, if possible. Prompt registration really helps in planning for the season (coaching needs, uniforms, etc).
The CYO Athletic Contract (form available below) must be completed prior to the first match. This form requires a signature by a doctor. Please keep this in mind when you schedule well checks this summer. The SJA Athletic Board will host a sports physical night at SJA in August. Watch the bulletin for this announcement.
What You Need to Do
- Fillout the registration form, player's contract, and emergency medical contact form. Each is linked below.
- Prepare a $55 check made payable to “St. Joan of Arc”. Please do not include other sports with this payment. This registration will be non-refundable after registration payment is made to CYO.
- Put in an envelope labelled "SJA Volleyball" and drop off in the SJA School office.
Please contact the SJA Volleyball Commissioner with any questions. Gretchen Hartlage at (419) 868-9879 cghartlage@buckeye-express.com
